Based
on the needs of leprosy control, a series of operational
researches, including models of leprosy infection
in mouse foot-pad & models of multibacillary
leprosy infection in nude mouse, were established
to be used for screening of the potential anti-leprosy
drugs, detection of the viability of M. leprae,
and conduction of clinical and experimental studies
on dapsone resistance. Furthermore, the Center
also carried out investigations on social medicine
of leprosy to investigate the impacts of leprosy
to patients¡¯ marital status, their families and
children, patients¡¯ personalities, behaviors
and life-expectancy, the attitudes, beliefs and
psychological reactions of community to leprosy,
and the evaluation of socio-economic benefits
of leprosy control programs. The findings from
the operational studies have provided a scientific
basis to guide practice of national programs of
leprosy control. |
