National Supervision Group visited Jiangyan County, Jiangsu Province for China-NLR Project

In order to improve the quality and efficiency of China-NLR Project, China-NLR Project sent a supervision group (consists of Prof. Zhang Guocheng, Deputy Director General of NCLC, Dr. Yu Meiwen, Deputy Director of Department of Leprosy Control, NLCL, Mrs. Sun Yemei, Department of Leprosy Control, NCLC) to Jiangyan County, Jiangsu Province to supervise the implementation of the project from April 7 to 10, 2006. Jiangyan County is one of five China-NLR Project Counties in China. At the same time, Jiangyan County is a demonstrating county for integration approach.

First, the project team of Jiangsu Province and Jiangyan County present the implementation and the outcome of the project to National Leprosy Supervision Group. At the same time, the supervision group reviewed all the documents including essential materials provided by provincial and county project office. During the field visit, the supervision group also interviewed the government officers including Director General of Office of Health in Jiangyan County, community leaders, leprosy workers, general health workers from county, township and village level, People Affected by Leprosy (PAL), etc.

After the visit of Jiangyan County and Baoying County, Jiangsu Province, the team made a conclusion that the establishment of demonstration area on integrating leprosy control service into general health services is very successful and should be extended to the whole province under the support from Jiangsu Provincial Health Bureau. At the same time, the prevention of disability and rehabilitation should be strengthened.
