Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: In order to improve multi-drug treatment
(MDT) regiment for leprosy patients, we studied the activity
of the combination of several new bactericidal drugs against
M. leprae in the nude mice. METHODS:
M. leprae-infected nude mice were treated from day 84
to 179 after inoculation using kinetic method. We evaluated
three regiments: minocycline (M) 0.01%+dapsone (D) 0.001%;
M+D+ofloxacin(O) 0.05%; M + D +refampicin (R) 0.01%in
diet. RESULTS: The results indicated
that there were additive or synergistic activity against
M. leprae, furthermore, combination of three effective
drugs were confirm-ed to be superior to that of two drugs.
CONCLUSIONS: Bactericidal activity of
M+D+R was the best in these regiments, 5 months after
stopping therapy, no multiplication of M. leprae were
observed in both hind foot pads of inoculated nude mice.
