OBJECTIVES: To study the feasibility
and result of thimlementation of Prevention of Disability
(POD) and rehabilitation of leprosy in the fields. METHODS:
According to the national criteria and principles on leprosy
ease selection, 27959 cases or cured patients in 14 pilot
areas were selected for the following projects: early
detection and training (10500), prevention and treatment
of peripheral neuritis (1 407) provision and follow-up
of protective footwears (8200) and prosthesis (613), comprehensive
therapy of complicated ulcers (1804) and reconstructive
surgery (269). RESULTS: Nerve function
improved or recovered in most of cases (166) out of 193
cases in those treated with corticosteroids. Out of the
10500 disabled affected by leprosy receiving self-care
training, 6743 cases were proficient in self-care and
their secondary impairments including ulcers, cracks,
vision loss, etc. reduced or markedly improved. Ulcers
healed in 1055 cases out of 1804 with complicated ulcers.
The function and appearance got improvement very much
in the cured patients who got prosthesis and reconstructive
surgery . CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible
to implement POD and rehabilitation project in the field
conditions, and is worthy to be popularised.
